Carys (SALT) and Sara (ABA Therapist/Supervisor) recently visited Speaking Space & Polygon School to observe social skills groups in action. They are now running social skills groups every Saturday afternoon at Skybound. Here is their report from their visit:
Our visit to Speaking Space
In preparation to running our own Social Skills groups at Skybound, we visited Speaking Space in Southampton.
We had the amazing opportunity to join the team at Speaking Space on Tuesday and learn a bit more about running social skills groups. First, we joined in with a tutor group, where service users did a feelings activity. It was great to see how the activities could be adapted for the needs of each individual. We then joined a self awareness/self esteem group. Service users were divided into groups of 5. It was lovely to see how well the groups came together and how each individual was working towards a specific target. Staff members were amazing at keeping all members of the group motivated and taking part in the activity. What surprised us the most was how the individuals were helping each other, praising each other and reminding each other of the targets they were working on. Later that morning we joined a self awareness and self esteem through film class. Service users chose a song to dance to. “Let’s get ready to Rhumble” was the winner!! Service users got to pick their outfits, hats, dresses, wigs, coats, dungarees, they had the lot! Once we were all dressed up it was time to bring the video camera out. They had so much fun, we ended up doing a film for “Thriller” as well. The most amazing thing we saw at Speaking Space was how these young adults had formed amazing relationships with staff members and each other.
After lunch we joined Amy at Polygon school. We had the chance to join in with two social skills groups. It was great to see the differences between a Y7 group, who had started social skills group 4 months ago, and a Y9 group, who had been attending social skills groups for the past 2 years. The group cohesion games they played were so much fun! We had a go at catch ball and fruit parcel competitions! We were also shown how to do a feelings board using cupcakes!
Here at Skybound we are very excited to be running social groups and cannot wait to put into practice all the amazing things we have learnt from Speaking Space and Polygon School.
