My experience has predominantly been in the support of adults with learning disabilities who display distressed behaviour. I have, however, worked with individuals ranging in age from 9 – 76 years old, in schools, residential homes and the community.
If I am not doing something behaviour-related, you will probably find me in the kitchen following a newly discovered recipe, supporting my budding gymnast-son or shopping with my daughter. Failing that, I am consuming sci fi movies, watching documentaries or travelling with my partner. I particularly enjoy experiencing other cultures.
Although my background is in Mathematics, I was gradually drawn to the field of behaviour analysis whilst exploring ways in which I could better help others. This began when I was supporting a young man in his early 20s who started displaying distressed behaviours that became increasingly challenging to the service. At that time, without access to in-depth information on behaviour analysis, an online search led me to the principles behind Positive Behaviour Support. About a year later I was enrolled on the BTEC Diploma in PBS provided through NHS Wales, and it was indirectly through this that I accidentally discovered Skybound Therapies!
One of the best things I have seen is the impact of the work we do in reducing one client’s distressed behaviours from rates exceeding 2000 per day, down to single-digit rates, and even none on some days! My proudest moment as an ABA Supervisor is seeing my colleagues developing the relationship and skills ultimately changing a 14-year old boy’s life, even when things get tough. The team has gone from working through rejection at the start of several sessions, to being asked not to leave at the end, all within 6 weeks. I am humbled by the riches of qualified talent that surrounds me.
